Blackhorse E-Newsletter December 2008

I am pleased to report more progress this month in moving the Association through the transition laid out by the General Membership at the Las Vegas Reunion.

Our improved web page at www.blackhorse.org was placed online on 9 November, our 38th
birthday. We have had very positive and exciting feedback from many of you. We will continue to upgrade our site and ask that you consider contributing news and information to the site. E-Mail your Director of Communications, Alex Silverman with your input. Her email address is alexsilverman2005@nullyahoo.com Our web page will only be as good as you make it.
So share your news and stories with all of us. The "Contact Us" has already brought many of our Blackhorse Family back home.

This same "Contact Us" link has already helped your Director of Memberships, Gene Johnson, in his monumental task of debugging our 19,000 membership data base. We found that some names did not match addresses—-for example, the member got the Newsletter at the proper address but under another member’s name. So, with the Jan/Feb mailing of the Blackhorse Newsletter, please help Gene finish his reconciliation of the data base by contacting him in event of a discrepancy. He has already corrected over 1500 discrepancies.

The Fulda Reunion Committee will be providing an update on the status of the June reunion soon. Watch this E-News and the web page for breaking news on all reunion plans. Although we had planned to send only one E-News monthly, we will certainly use this means to communicate time sensitive information to you on an as needed basis.

Finish Line Awards, the future source of our "Blackhorse Gear", is in the final stages of preparation of online shopping opportunities for our soldiers and members. Watch the web page on our "Blackhorse Gear" link for activation of this service. Target date is NLT 10 Dec.

Our donations are at a twelve month low for both operating funds and scholarship funds. We need 10 to 20 percent of our 19,000 members to donate a mere $100 each year to make this Association flourish. There are about 100 members funding this Association—–we will not survive at this rate—–so I ask each of you to contribute at a level that best fits your financial situation but don’t delay, let’s get started now. Remember that commitment made 38 years ago- I know you will.

Happy Holidays to everyone and cherish every minute of your time with your family and friends.

Allons! and Blackhorse Forever!

John Sherman

Sutler’s Store and 11th ACR Memorabilia Web Site Update:

Your Blackhorse Association has signed a three year contract with Finish Line Awards (FLA) out of Wellington, Colorado to operate our 11th ACR memorabilia web site. After several months of discovery and negotiation the contract was signed in late October.

FLA have a similar arrangement in place with the 14th Cav Assn and it has been very successful and beneficial for both parties over the past 10 years or so.

Expect to see the web site up late in the month of November. It will be accessible via www.Blackhorse.org, and once it is up and running, you will also be able to access it directly and place orders. The web site will have a new, improved look to it and the inventory will be updated over the upcoming months to reflect some of your inputs from the recently conducted June 08 Customer Survey. Stay tuned. More information to follow in the December E-News Letter.

Meanwhile, we will be meeting with Finish Line Awards, the Ft. Irwin Command Group, the 11th ACR Command Group, and the Ft. Irwin Army Museum Manager in November at Ft. Irwin to discuss and develop a plan to reopen a Sutler’s Store of some sort there. We are hopeful that we can make this happen. There will be some challenges that we will need to overcome to make this work and over the longer term to keep anoperation open at Ft. Irwin. We will need your continuing support to a new setup to ensure that we can keep it in operation and available to support you. Our November meeting at Ft. Irwin will determine the nature of the new operation.

The Blackhorse Association portion of the store front profits will go back to the association to support BHA operating costs and our Scholarship Program for the children of the regiment who have lost a parent while in the service of our country and our regiment.

Stay tuned. We will give you an update on the Ft. Irwin reopened Store Front initiative in the December E-News Letter.

Blackhorse Trooper Address Updates

I have received numerous corrections concerning addresses on the recent mailing of the newsletter.

Although, we had the database checked back for four years of Change of Addresses through the Postal System, we had over 3,000 newsletters returned because of addressing errors.

A major portion of these mistakes can be attributed to my inexperience with computers, and names and addresses were associated wrongly. Many others are the result of not doing a mailing for so long that our data base is out of date, and Troopers no longer lived at the addresses we had in the database.

Some Troopers received newsletters at their address with the wrong name and others may not have received a newsletter because someone did not recognize the addressed name on the newsletter.

Still others were in the mailing databases that were deceased.

If you received a newsletter at your address with the wrong name, or an address that was not entirely correct, please let me know both the wrong and correct information.

It would help also if you could complete the update membership information and send it to me so that the association can keep track of Troopers by service dates and locations.
