Report on Status of our Stones at Fulda and Bad Hersfeld

From Steve Steininger

I enjoyed an extended stay just west of Fulda in Kleinluder this past weekend.

While in the area, I checked on our stones; pictures are attached. It’s been well over a year since my last investment of time & effort in these items, so someone else must be taking care of them as well.

Also spent an afternoon in the old GDP sectors for 1st and 2nd Squadrons with a stop-over at Point Alpha. The new exhibits look nice, but I prefer the older one better as it’s less political and more representative of our time on the trace. However, all in all, the place looks great.

We trekked over to the House on the Border-on the old GDR side, against my instincts and better judgement-and can report that it was okay, but I never need to go back.

The stone in Bad Hersfeld is in top condition too. The city appears to be taking care of it as promised.

Request for Assistance in Cold War Education Project

Last year Volker Bausch initiated an interactive, transatlantic history project between students from Germany and the States. Key topics of the project were the Cold War period and the German division with a focus on the Fulda/Bad Hersfeld region. During last year’s project, former trooper Mel Sanch from Michigan gave a valuable input to students of the Michigan partner school.

In 2018, the project will be realized in three schools on both sides of the Atlantic. We’re looking for veterans willing to share their experiences with students of schools in St. Joseph, MO; San Antonio, TX; and San Diego, CA.

More information on this project can be found on page 13 of the TOP magazine at the link below:

If you are interested and would like to participate, please send a note to Volker Bausch at opens in a new windowvbausch@nullgmx.netcreate new email.
