It is my sad duty to inform you of the death of one of the 11th Cavalry’s most heroic soldiers, former LT Mike Bates. Mike died on 3 Feb 2010 after a long battle with cancer in Watauga, TX
Mike flew and fought in the Air Cavalry Troop in 1968 and 1969. He flew as my pilot from Sep 1968 until April 1969. He later flew Cobra gunships in the troop. For his heroic actions in these jobs he was decorated with a Silver Star, 7 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 3 Bronze Stars for Valor, over 35 Air Medals and 3 Purple Hearts. He was given a Direct Commission from Warrant Officer to 2nd Lieutenant during this time by Colonel George Patton, the Regimental Commander.Mike is survived by his wife Linda Bates and four grown children.

A memorial service will be held next week with details pending. It is requested that in lieu of flowers that a contribution be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mike Bates. Further details will follow. Linda would be pleased to hear from anyone who served with Mike.
